Product Review

Have you had enough of clunky, loud toasters? Then this Black-and-Decker Arize toaster might be just what you need.

This toaster features easy-to-use controls and simple cleaning. One dial allows you to specify whether you're cooking toast, a bagel, or frozen food, while another allows finer control over the heat. Openable glass sides and a removable crumb tray make cleaning a charm. Extra safety features include automatic food-jam shutoff and a reset/stop button. The toaster holds two pieces of bread end-on-end

Amazon.com Review

While the space-age design of this toaster makes it look like something from The Jetsons, it is actually quite easy to use. The toaster has an extra-long two-slot capacity that is wide enough to handle thicker slices of bread or bagels. The glass panels on either side let you view the whole toasting process as you press the Start button and watch your bread descend. Self-adjusting guides keep your bread secured and pass it by fixed cal-rod heating elements. This new toasting technology ensures superior browning on the outside without drying out the moist center of your bread. Three settings--Toast, Bagel, and Defrost/Reheat--and a toast color selector allow you to set the toaster for just the amount of crispness you like. An indicator light comes on when the desired shade of toastiness has been reached. Both the glass panels and the crumb tray on the bottom of the toaster slide out for easy cleaning. You can stop and reset your toasting preference at any time and, for safety, the Arize will turn itself off in the event of a food jam. At 15 by 4-by 7-1/2 inches, this toaster takes up a lot of counter space--but you'll want to leave it out so you can watch the toasting in action. --Cristina Vaamonde

On the first try, the toaster worked as advertised. Bread was crisp and golden on the outside, still moist and tender inside. But then the problems began. The most serious was having the bread burst into flames. The toaster isn't by the sink and getting the burning bread out was a challenge. I called the 1-800 number that came with the product and customer service seemed only mildly concerned. I do like the product, decided I was unlucky in buying one that was defective, and exchanged it for a new one.On 2-3 occassions with the second toaster the toast has come up with small open flames on the edges. Thin bread tends to curl and at least twice the bread has curled around the support wires and jammed the toaster. On occassion, one side of the toast looks fine while the other is burnt black. Pressing the STOP button doesn't seem to abort the cycle if the toast starts to get overdone. Wisps of smoke are quite common. I'm sure this product received thorough testing so I am at...Read more

Half toaster, half spaceship. My mother gave me this toaster as an apartment warming gift. Little did she know that this little toaster would literally try to make the apartment a bit warmer. I have to admit, it was pretty entertaining watching the toast go up and down the first time. And I mean, how many times in your life do you get to see a toaster with a RESET button?! Well, it turns out you really need to hit this button if you prefer your kitchen in its current, pristine, non-burnt condition. Upon my third use of this toaster, I had "pain a la flambé" rather than toast. Did they really make this toaster just for the novelty of watching toast go up and down through a heating element. (I mean, really - what are those display window doors for? They seem to serve no purpose but to make the thing more "hip.") If you value your home, I'd suggest you pass up this gadget. Oh, and I gave the thing two stars because, well, the toasting process is rather entertaining, in a...Read more

Thought this cool looking toaster by Black & Decker would look great in my new kitchen, which it does. The problem is, everything it toasts catches on fire!! My daughter was toasting bread and flames started shooting out of the top. We haven't found anything yet that wouldn't burn. Don't waste your money unless of course you want your house to burn down...
