Calphalon 4-Slot Toaster

Fast toaster but the results are inconsistent, depending on what you are toasting. Heavier breads like sourdough and english muffins toast well but a medium density wheat bread toasts darker on one side (set at 12 o'clock). I talked to Calphalon and they said the degree of toasting depends on bread density, sugar content, etc. We bought a similar style Kitchen Aid and got the same results with the same breads. We like the speed and general overall toast quality of Calphalon so we decided to live with our wheat bread darker on one side and returned the Kitchen Aid (which seems inferior quality and appearance wise).

We just purchased this yesterday (5/1/2011) from another retailer since the price was just a tad better with a coupon we had.

We used it this morning to toast 2 slices of whole wheat bread and 2 slices of Honey Apple Oat bread from Wegmans.

We set it to the 4th mark (darkness setting) since we didn't want to over toast on our first try. It came out toasted but not browned, so I just did the same setting and toasted it again. Then it came out nicely browned.

Tomorrow, I will probably put it on the 6th mark and see how that comes out. Just for reference there are a total of 9 marks for darkness setting.

The toast was evenly toasted on both sides. The bottom corners (just 1/8-1/4" in) were not as brown, but honestly that doesn't matter to me.

I've had this toaster for about a month, so far I'm very satisfied. Works fast, the slots seem the right width, and the features are good. Looks good too! I had originally thought that the price was a bit high, but generally speaking, you get what you pay for. I'm glad I purchased this one.
