Impressive appliance! Having had the 31989 for three months and used it everyday, I am extremely pleased. I have baked, broiled and toasted and found it does everything extremely well. The most fascinating thing is the self cleaning surface. Nothing sticks to it. Melted cinnamon candy topping from Panera's bagels just wipe off the drip pan with a paper towel with no residue. Likewise cheese from the pizza does the same. No washing required! Build quality was excellent, everything fit perfectly. I use it virtually everyday for some task. I have baked pies, cheese cake, Pizza, potatoes, and everything else. The convection feature of the oven insures everything is evenly browned. One of the best purchases I've made. It would have received five stars if the top had been insulated. Like most, if not all toaster ovens, exterior surfaces get hot. However, the fan runs after shutoff to quickly cool the exterior and prevent accidental burns.

I really took my time shopping toaster ovens. I actually purchased a cuisinart rto-20 and ended out taking it back to the store before settling on the hamilton beach 31989. The only criteria I had when I started was that I didn't want to spend more than $100. Boy did I find it hard to get a decent and quality toaster oven for that price. It's important that anyone who reads this review knows that my basis for comparison is the Cuisinart TOB-175 which retails for about $150-$189.
Pro's: 1) performance - it toasts on both sides, bakes well, broils well. I have had no problem cooking anything in it. It actually takes less time than my oven to cook many things 2) It's super easy to clean. I made the mistake of cooking a greasy chicken dish in it and it really splattered the sides. There was no problem wiping it down. The crumb tray is also easy to clean. 3) ease of use - although I did end out reading the instructions, it wasn't necessary. The programmed buttons also work well...Read more

I actually bought this toaster oven from Kohls. I've had it for three years now and I love it. Very nice looking and well made. As per most inexpensive toaster ovens, the food in the back of the oven will heat slightly faster than the food in the front but not by much. Other than that it heats up quickly and food is pretty evenly cooked. Nice roomy interior. Enough button options but not too many. I would definitely buy this again
