Rounded and plump, this two-slice toaster from Rival fits the bill for one or two people. Thick bagels fit handily into the 5-by-1-1/8-inch slots, while self-centering guides keep bread slices of any thickness evenly spaced from the heating elements. One simple dial rotates to select the desired browning setting, while a snowflake icon indicates the defrost setting. If a piece of toast gets stuck the toaster automatically shuts off; if toast browns too quickly, hitting the cancel button stops the process. An extra-lift lever raises the carriage for easy removal of small pieces. Two-tone, cool-touch housing makes the toaster moveable even during toasting, and a slide-out crumb tray facilitates cleaning. Like most models, it has several settings for adjusting how dark you want your toast. Unfortunately, there is little rhyme or reason to the numerical settings on this model. Straight out of the box, I chose the setting "3" (out of 5) to test it out on an ordinary piece of white bread. It promptly burned my toast to a crisp. I needed to open a window before the fire alarm sounded, due to the smoke.
In the maker's defense, this model is intended for people who also use a toaster for things such as frozen waffles, etc. So now you might be thinking "obviously 3 is too high for ordinary toast, try a lower setting!" I did; however "1" ejects the bread much too soon and doesn't even make it crisp, and "2" toasts but not to the average color and texture I prefer. And I'm sincerely not being picky, this toaster simply does not function to a degree suitable for anyone. Well, unless you don't care if your toast is: (choice A) not...Read more |
