Summary: Do not buy this toaster! 2009-12-14
Comment: I read the reviews and this toaster sounded like the best value. Immediately after taking it out of the box - it did not work. The lever would not stay down. The elements would only heat if you held the lever down. Instructions are to contact T-Fal. You then need to send the toaster to one of their authorized service centers. They did provide a prepaid mailing label. I inadvertantly left out one of the many required items of information that had to be included. Then I tried to contact the company. Good luck trying to find a person to talk to at the service center - it took over 12 minutes - and you must listen to unending advertisements about their products. Never again will I buy a T-Fal product. As to the toaster - it is still in the service center - I have no idea whether it makes good toast or not. (And in listening to the recorded message while on hold, it will be 10-14 days before they inform me as to the state of the repairs.)I just can't recommend any product that is defective from the start and not immediately replaced by the company.

Comment: The well-written instructions tell you to first wipe down the toaster with a wet cloth, and for good reason: it arrives filthy, all covered in dust.
The toaster is of average construction, built like many in this price range with a thin plastic outer case. The case does not get unreasonably hot after a single use but will become untouchable after several repeated cycles, such as the initial three cycles in a row on high recommended by the instructions.
The bright LED display thankfully goes dark several minutes after use. The single LED digit indicates the chosen darkness setting from 1 to 8, and the series of illuminated bars count down during a toasting cycle. Presumably this electronic control will provide consistent results at a given setting.
My unit arrived with one sticky button that took significant effort to push, but after a day it loosened up to nearly normal.
The unit beeps whenever you push a button, and beeps twice at the end of a toasting cycle just before the bread pops up.
After reading several toaster reviews on Amazon, it seems most toasters with a Bagel function don't toast evenly, almost as if the Bagel function is always sort of active. It's the same with this toaster; the side of bread towards the center of the toaster comes out darker than the other side.
I've only used frozen bread so far and the Defrost function works well. The inside of frozen bread does remain slightly cool when using the lowest darkness setting.
Like many 2-slice toasters, the slots aren't quite long enough to easily hold larger slices of store-bought bread. Manufacturers should add one more inch to their slots.
All in all I'd rate this toaster a good value for the price, but deduct one star for uneven toasting. I hope it provides many years of service like my T-Fal kettle has.
