Toastmaster TOV320 4-Slice Toaster Oven Broiler

This was just about the cheapest toaster oven I came across in my search, but so far it's worked really well. This one, the TOV320, is a replacement for the older TOV200 model. I bought it mainly for cooking frozen pizzas and the like, because my regular kitchen oven isn't working. Of course a toaster oven of this size can only cook half of a 10- or 11-inch frozen pizza, but it does it really well. I've been making mine right on the wire rack, without using a pan or cookie sheet (as is sometimes recommended in the pizza instructions - though the metal broiler pan that comes with the oven can be used if you like softer crust). The pizzas cook up perfectly every time - lightly browned on the top, and a little crispy on the bottom. This oven, despite its price, seems to have a really effective thermostat that cycles the heating elements on and off during cooking, so it heats very evenly. It toasts well too. I bought this about 5 years ago when I moved to a new apartment. It was the perfect size for my countertop, seemed simple to use, and wasn't an energy hog.

However, within only a couple of weeks of using it for toast and frozen dinners, I found a few things I didn't like:

1) The element stays on even when the door is open. Now, some people think that's "good" because it keeps the oven heated even when you want to check the food, but, I think it's a good safety measure to turn it off when opened. A few seconds either way isn't going to make much of a difference, and it just might prevent a shock or burn.

2) The grill/tray does not slide in or out easily. There is a "hook" that should move the grill/tray out when opened and in when closed. But, in practice, it requires the consumer to push or pull the grill/tray manually, which, if you're not thinking, could end up burning you.

in the garbage we went back to the trusty smaller oven. For the price and toasting quality you can't beat this model.
